About

Avery holds a Masters of Science degree in Mental Health Counseling from the University of the District of Columbia (HBCU). He completed his practicum and internship at the Whitman Walker Health Clinic in Washington DC. Avery’s primary specialty is Internal Family Systems (IFS), an evidence based theoretic approach that is unique to many other types of therapy. He is also trained in Gestalt techniques and is an approved clinician to work with Highly Sensitive Persons (HSP)s.

How I work with clients

Avery enjoys working with all types of clients, and his primary specialty is compassionate & competent care for military and veteran communities, as well as their families and first responders. Other competencies include anxiety/depression, trauma, privilege, power, multicultural issues and all identities under the LGBTQIA+ umbrella.

Treatment approach

Avery’s intention is for you to feel safe bringing all parts of yourself into our sessions. All of you - all feelings, all identities and parts - are welcome. Only in a relationship of relative safety & non-judgement can growth happen. He maintains that YOU are the expert on you and as such takes a client-centered, collaborative, and relational approach to therapy. He will use the relationship, his experience, and YOUR insight & self-knowing, as well as appropriate tools & techniques. He will ask about your goals, challenges, strengths, and what has worked for you in the past. Your care will be as individual as you are.
